Class I took: Regular SoulCycle 45 minute class
Instructor: Julie Anne
Location: E. 83rd St. location
What I liked:
Most people already know what's up with SoulCycle. Some people may have a predetermined mindset about what the classes are and who attends said classes, but I'm going to tell you, don't listen to stereotypes. I had my own thoughts about it before attending and, honestly, I just didn't want to become addicted. This is mostly because of the cost, but I'm here to say, it's totally worth it depending on what you are looking for in a spin class. Here is a breakdown of my experience:
I have attended two of Julie Anne's classes, both in the morning hours. I would go to her 6:00 A.M. class every morning if I could. It is exactly what I need to get through the long work day ahead. What I like about her class is that she is positive, but not overly cheery like some other instructors can be (which, don't get me wrong, is totally fine if that's what you like in a class and I understand the appeal and the joy that comes out of that, but it's not my style). She provides motivation and intensity that makes you want to power through the workout without stopping.
What I didn't like:
I don't really have complaints about her class, but I wish that the rental shoes weren't so savaged.
Final thoughts:
Like all group fitness classes, it all depends on the instructor. I have found two instructors that I like and will continue to go back to when I am in dire need of some spinning and have some extra cash to spend on myself. If you like cardio workouts and like to sweat like crazy, no harm in checking out her class! It will 100% get you ready for the day (or night, whatever you fancy).
Pro Tips:
- When the instructor says to put resistance on, put the resistance on. You will thank yourself later.
- There are some "SoulCycle phrases", such as "tap it back", that I think are kind of comical. It may take you a couple of classes to get used to both doing the moves and hearing the names. Don't be timid, though. Give them a try!
Price:
Intro rate for first timers is $20 + free shoe rental
Single sessions after your first time are $34.00 + $3.00 shoe rental, unless you have your own cycling shoes
Will I return:
Absolutely. Like I mentioned before, I have two instructors that I like and I will definitely return to their classes.
